What Brake Calipers Do

The factory brake calipers in your vehicle are an essential part of your braking system. In fact, it could be argued that they're one of the most important parts of a disc braking system. Put simply, the brake caliper clamps down on the brake rotor to slow and stop the wheel from turning. When you press the brake pedal, brake fluid is sent out of the master cylinder. That fluid puts pressure the pistons inside the caliper, which forces the caliper against the rotor. Each caliper has brake pads inside to cushion the rotor from metal-on-metal contact that can warp it.

How to Know When Calipers Begin Failing

Even the highest-quality brake calipers can eventually start to fail due to the heat generated when you brake. Other than your warning light alertingy you, here are some signs to look for:

  • Your brakes make grinding, squealing, or squeaking noises
  • Your vehicle pulls to the side when you brake
  • You have to pump your brake pedal to get your brakes to work
  • Your brake pad feels soft or spongy

If you experience any of these signs, have your brakes looked at. Since the seals in your calipers can weaken and eventually break down, yours may have become dirty, contaminated, or rusty. You might even be leaking brake fluid.
